‘Somewhere In Between’ Closing
Closing Reflections on Fiyin Koko’s Residency at AMAH Studio
April 8, 2025
There are moments that don’t need to be loud to be unforgettable, they just ask to be felt. Fiyin Koko’s time with us as the inaugural AMAH AIR resident was exactly that kind of moment. Quietly powerful. Deeply moving.
From the very beginning, Fiyin made AMAH her own. A striking blue box appeared in the heart of our studio, a space within a space, pulsing gently with her presence. It was her cocoon, her canvas, her altar. A world built from brushstrokes, textures, and thoughtful silences.
When that box came down to make way for her breathtaking 37.5-foot piece to be unfurled from the penthouse ceiling, it marked a transformation. Not just of the work, but of all of us who witnessed it. That piece, touched by seventeen women, became a living archive — of memory, resilience, and reverence.
The final weekend was slow and soft. No spectacle, just steady streams of love — people coming through with quiet awe, pausing, reflecting, offering hugs, and taking their time. It felt like dusk. It felt like closure.
This residency was a journey of care. Every decision — from curatorial dialogue to spatial design — was a collaboration shaped by intuition, trust, and deep emotional labor. Immense gratitude to curator Chisom Peter Job and the AMAH studio team, whose sensitivity helped bring this vision to life with such grace. Her choices made space for Fiyin’s work to breathe, to speak, and to hold us.
This was never about spectacle. It was always about spirit. And in holding that spirit, we are reminded of what AMAH exists to do — to nurture, to archive, to amplify, and to create space for presence.
We will miss the rustle of canvas. The hum of focus. Fiyin’s warmth. Her laughter. Her grace. But most of all, we’re grateful — that she came, that she stayed, and that she created.
Residencies are meant to leave traces.
This one carved something deep.
